enables unusual patterns (which may indicate improvement or decline) to easily be identified;
enables boards to understand whether a target or standard can be consistently met;
reduces the amount of time spent unnecessarily investigating changes in data which are due to normal variation
SPC is a technique that is underpinned by science. There is a wealth of published research which shows that better decisions are made when data is looked at over time as SPC charts.
This session will be interactive and focussed on the benefits of using SPC across a system. Attendees will be asked to consider different presentations of data and discuss what messages they glean from the data and what action they would take as a result. We will provide an introduction to the different types of variation and explain the importance of reacting to each type of variation in the correct way. The session will be tailored to Surrey Heartlands and will involve presenting local data in an alternative format exposing different messages from the data
I can offer a 90 minute board session covering the dangers of RAG and two point comparisons and the benefits of SPC. Sessions are fun and interactive and very well received by board members and have resulted in significant change to the format of reports and board level discussions. Currently over 80 Trusts have received a session and a number of commissioners.
Here are a selection of comments from board members:
“Very valuable presentation with significant potential to improve my ability as a NED to make good decisions”
“Eye opening presentation on SPC – excellent explanation of benefits”
“Excellent use of Executive time”
“This needs to be done at every level top to bottom”
“Huge added value - a game changer”
“All providers and commissioners should do this – it’s like switching the light on so you can see the data”
