A Community of Opportunity - Supporting BAME Colleagues in the Workplace

Like many of you, at Hexitime we have been reflecting on how we can best support recent calls for racial equality. We recognise how the very best improvement and innovation work for our health and social care services is done better when multi-disciplinary efforts are led and made up of diverse teams. But we also acknowledge that many people's career progression is underpinned by secondments, special projects, interim or acting up roles and other stretch opportunities. We want to make sure our Black, Asian and minority ethnic colleagues are offered the same opportunities to grow and demonstrate their potential. It also chimes with our underlying principle that everyone's time is valued equally, whatever your job title, or background.

So, to contribute to the cause, we want to make sure our technology at Hexitime.com can be used to support and develop the professional development of our Black, Asian and minority ethnic colleagues across the NHS and social care workforce. We think our ‘offer’ and ‘request’ functions are a good way for you to share the skills and support available in our community to make this happen.

We have therefore launched a campaign with our first strategic partners Kent Surrey Sussex Academic Health Science Network and Walsall Together to support this, and we are asking members to help by taking small action in the following ways:

  1. Use our ‘offer’ function for posting opportunities to support others professionally. This could include, job shadowing, reviewing CVs or help practicing for interviews for example.
  2. When completing the offer tag it to the ‘Diversity and Racial Equality’ campaign.
  3. Support BAME colleagues to use our ‘request’ function to ask for specific support they would like to access. We will help them network to find it.
  4. Encourage BAME colleagues to consider what they can offer on the platform and thereby act as role models for others.
  5. Share our campaign and encourage colleagues to take advantage of some of the fantastic free offers on the platform. All new members are gifted two credits entitling them to two hours and there is no obligation to give time back when taking up an offer.
